Does Technology making you a better parent?

[ March 12, 2010 | 0 comments ]

These are the days of technology. We are surrounded by computers, iPods, Facebook, smart phones, Twitter, Blogs, video game platforms and so much MORE. There isn’t a day that goes by that my fingers aren’t on several pieces of above stated equipment like most other parents these days.

Without the resources available through technology I wouldn’t be the mother I am now. That could go either way. I can honestly admit to tuning out shrieks and cries while trying to read an article, write a blog post or catch up on email. I also know that I wouldn’t have made so many “green” and healthy choices for my family over the past several years without the resources available to me on the internet. I wouldn’t be working with so many wonderful sponsors if I didn’t have the internet at my fingertips at any given moment on our laptops, smartphones or iPods. My cooking would suffer if I didn’t have endless recipes to check out and try out for my family. My kids wouldn’t get the chance to play the coolest games and toys if I didn’t read about up and coming products. My smartphone contains all of my contacts; this includes personal friends and family, our medical contacts, the kids school friends and business contacts.  The family calendar is also very important, I need access to that at all times, this happens on the laptop and syncs up on my phone.

Books are great, magazines even better but I find something satisfying when I can type a 2 or 3 word phrase and find 28,093 results in .23 seconds. Google is my friend.  Books take up space, cost money or need to be returned to the library and usually cover 1 person's point of view or expertise.  I want a variety of information about all kind of subject and the internet brings me that.

I’m not saying I would be a terrible parent if I didn’t have these resources and tools but I do think I’m a more informed and better decision making parent today then my parents were 30 years ago.

MUK LUKS shoes not just for Eskimos

A muk luk is a soft boot made of reindeer skin or seal skin worn by Eskimos. That’s the traditional meaning anyway, my MUK LUKS are cuter. I was sent a pair of Horizontal Rib lace back boots for review and love the look and feel of them.

Why Do We Visit Family Only After Tragedy?

[ March 9, 2010 | 7 comments ]

Why does it usually take a tragedy for people to visit family? I am sure this is not the case for everyone but I am sure this is true for at least 50% of people.

Unfortunately, I am one of those people in the 50% area. When we used to live in Delaware we would visit my parents and grandparents every other month if not once a month. Once we moved to MD three years ago we visit my parents and grandparents every 3-4 months. Part of the reason is the 1.5 – 2 hour car ride from MD to Southern NJ. Shaun and Shae are not built for long car rides which really makes me think twice before we take a road trip. The other part is laziness on my behalf. I hate driving and the thought of a 2 hour ride to NJ and a 2 hour ride to MD all in one day is just too much to bear sometimes.

On Saturday I got a call from my mother that my father was in the hospital because he had some tightening in his chest. After I spoke to my mother Melinda and I planned to take a road trip with the kids to the hospital in Abington, PA on Sunday. Why was this road trip any different from all of the others and why did we decide to take one in less than two minutes? It was the tragedy of the situation. Even though not life threatening it could turn life threatening any time and I wanted to see my father just in case something went wrong.

As I am writing this post I am realizing that I have been selfish for the last three years. Because we live far from relatives we do not visit as often unless something serious happens. I need to make it a point to visit family because I want to and because I want them to spend some time with my kids.

Do you tend to visit family after tragedy or do you visit family more often?

Is This Guy Freaking Serious?

[ March 8, 2010 | 13 comments ]

If you guys have met me in person or have seen pictures of me you would know I am a tall guy. I am about 6’2 and my legs are long as heck.

I ride the bus to work because it is cheaper than driving and parking in the city. For the most part I don’t mind riding the bus but I am serious when I say the bus is like the airlines; cramped with ZERO leg room for us tall people.
